Curricular Overview:
Modeled after the 19th-century European Academy's technical traditions, the curriculum of Sumpter Academy of Art is developmental and individualized. Drawing upon its Renaissance roots, course instruction emphasizes the traditions of portraiture, landscape and still-life genres. Consistent attendance is highly recommended as technical development requires active discourse between practice and critical feedback.
 
Course Description:
This 10-week term is focused on painting development toward mastery in the use of color; Students learn vital aspects of palette management, paint mixing, application and brushwork. Perhaps more importantly, students gain an understanding in applied harmonies and naturalistic coloring. A series of shorter exercises guide the student toward a greater level of sophistication and sensitivity to color and design. Skill building proceeds in a step by step process with individualized instruction. Genres of portraiture, landscape and still-life will be covered over the course of a year (3 terms) of study.
