Course Description
This course provides a structured yet responsive introduction to painting, focusing on the development of essential skills while fostering fluency in both layered and direct (alla prima) approaches. Instruction guides students through the study of masterworks, structured exercises, and original compositions—all with attention to visual design, brush economy, and tonal clarity.
Emphasis is placed on seeing and translating form through confident execution—whether through a carefully layered process or through decisive wet-in-wet techniques. Students learn to balance accuracy with gesture, structure with spontaneity, and detail with suggestion. Drawing knowledge serves as the foundation, while paint becomes the medium for dynamic observation, expressive editing, and refinement of surface. Techniques may include Italian and Spanish layered methods, French academic approaches, and painterly direct application from life and reference.
