Sumpter Academy of Art is Portland's school for the study of classical drawing and painting. The Academy offers both short-term coursework and the opportunity for extended developmental study that combines 19th century atelier practices with those of the original Italian academy--first founded by Annibale Carracci in 1582 (as the Accademia degli Incamminati).

ATELIER UNDERPINNINGS

Primary instruction at Sumpter Academy is offered in 3 primary areas of study: Drawing, Painting application, and Color Mastery in Paint. Instruction is offered with the understanding that students develop at varying rates, and arrive with diverse strengths and weaknesses. Our curriculum allows students to develop at their own pace--from foundations to the mastery of the classical techniques in drawing and painting.
